For most of the eighteenth century the house was occupied by Christopher Townsend, his wife, and their six children, one of whom was John Townsend, the celebrated Newport cabinetmaker. The house has also been the residence of a Revolutionary War naval officer, a clockmaker, and a shoemaker. Throughoutits long history the house has been carefully maintained and respected as a house worthy of preservation. It was rescued from demolition in 1960 by a preservation-minded family who owned it for the next fifty-four years at which point it was purchased by NRF. Although the house needs updating and is being sold “as is,” this is a rare and exciting opportunity to own a piece of Newport history and continue the stewardship as others with a keen interest in preserving the house for future generations.
